Netflix has dropped the first trailer for its upcoming South African drama series Umthetho, offering viewers a first look at the eight-part crime drama ahead of its August premiere.
Produced by Black Brain Pictures, the series is an adaptation of Netflix’s Brazilian drama Brotherhood Nqobile Nunu Khumalo, Tony Kgoroge and Given Stuurman, alongside an ensemble cast that includes Sindi Dlathu, SK Khoza, Lorcia Cooper-Khumalo, Obed Baloyi and Ernest Msibi.
What is Umthetho about?
Umthetho follows Mbali, a brilliant young public prosecutor whose life is turned upside down when she discovers that her long-lost brother, Moses, is running a ruthless prison syndicate. Forced to choose between family and justice, Mbali reluctantly joins forces with Moses to protect their younger brother, Sphelele.
As loyalties are tested, she finds herself caught between upholding the law and protecting the people she loves. With high-stakes twists, impossible moral choices and complex family dynamics, the series asks one central question: when family and justice collide, which side do you choose?

The series is led by Nqobile Nunu Khumalo as Mbali, Tony Kgoroge as Moses and Given Stuurman as Sphelele. The supporting cast includes Lorcia Cooper-Khumalo, SK Khoza, Sindi Dlathu, Molefi Monaisa, Ernest Msibi, Lungelo Madondo, Obed Baloyi, Mandla Gaduka and Herald Khumalo.

Umthetho is produced by Black Brain Pictures. The company has produced a wide range of popular local dramas and series, including eHostela, Lockdown, DiepCity, The Black Door, Isitha: The Enemy, Isiphetho: Destiny, Vula Vala, Black Gold, Abomzala, Thandeka’s Diary, City Ses’La, Ses’Top La, Joko Ya Hao, Side Dish, Mabaso Family Reunion, Paradys and Lenyalo Ha Se Papadi.

The series is executive produced by Mandla N, Mpumelelo Nhlapo and Annelie van Rooyen. Directing duties are shared by Mandla N, Johnny Barbuzano and Jonathan “Jono” Hall, while the writing team is led by head writer Jose Domingos, alongside Rami Nhlapo, Boitumelo Masemola and Makanaka Mavengere.
When does Umthetho premiere?
Umthetho premieres on Netflix on Friday, 14 August 2026. The eight-episode drama will be available to stream worldwide from launch.
