After spending two weeks with the Honor X7d 5G, I’ve come to appreciate it more every day. It’s marketed as a tough, smart, reliable phone for everyday life in South Africa, and after living with it, I can say most of that is true. It’s not just built for convenience – it’s built for our dust, heat, networks, and the way we move through our days.
Battery life
The 6500mAh battery is honestly one of the strongest features. I could easily get through a full day without worrying about charging, even on days where I was constantly on social media, listening to music, and taking calls. I never felt battery stress once. The 35W charging is decent enough when you need a quick boost.

Speakers
The speakers are incredibly loud. Honor claims the phone can reach four times the normal volume, and I actually believe it. Videos sound full, music carries well, and calls on loudspeaker are clear and sharp. For a phone that starts at R3 999, the audio quality is impressive.
Display
The 6.77-inch display with 120Hz refresh rate is smooth and comfortable to use. Reading, writing, scrolling, and working all felt very easy on the eyes. The brightness boost outdoors is helpful, especially under strong sunlight. I also liked the eye comfort features, because they really matter when you spend hours on your phone.

Connectivity
One thing that surprised me was how stable the network was. With my other devices, I normally experience random signal drop-offs. With the Honor X7d 5G, I didn’t experience a single issue. The calls remained clean and steady, and mobile data stayed consistent even in places where I usually struggle. The AI noise cancelling also makes conversations sound clearer.
Camera and video
The camera takes good photos and videos, and it handles everyday content creation well. What really impressed me is the AI video editor. It can automatically edit your clips, and there are presets for different video setups, which makes it really useful for anyone creating content quickly. It’s simple to use, yet powerful enough for casual creators who want professional-looking results.
AI features
I enjoy the AI Button more than I expected. It makes the phone feel quicker because the apps I use often are only one press away. A long press brings up smart suggestions, which felt useful throughout my day. The AI Writing tool is a bonus for someone like me who works with words. It helps rewrite short sentences or explain tricky terms without fuss.
Durability
This phone is built with South Africa in mind. It’s SGS certified for drop and crush resistance, and the IP65 protection handles dust and water easily. I didn’t do a drop test myself, but the phone feels tough and secure in the hand. The back design feels smooth yet strong. With our dusty areas, heat waves, and unexpected rain, it’s good knowing the device can take real-life knocks.
What I didn’t like
There are two things that disappointed me. The first is the lack of FM Radio. I enjoy listening to the Phaphama Breakfast Show on Munghana Lonene FM early in the morning, and without an FM Radio, I can’t listen directly like I used to. The second is the missing headphone jack. With loud speakers and clear call quality, the phone would have felt more complete with a simple 3.5mm port.
Performance and storage
The Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 chip with 12GB RAM equivalent (through RAM Turbo) handles everyday tasks smoothly. Switching between apps, scrolling, typing, and browsing all felt responsive. The 256GB storage is generous for photos, videos, and apps. It’s not a flagship chip, but it’s strong enough for daily use.
Final verdict
The Honor X7d 5G is much better than its price suggests. At a starting price of R3 999, it offers strong battery life, loud speakers, good performance, reliable connectivity, useful AI features, and a capable camera system for both photos and videos. It’s also tough enough for real South African conditions: dust, heat, sudden rain, and long travel days. The lack of FM Radio and a headphone jack might bother some people, including me, but overall the experience is impressive for what you pay.
