As one of South Africa’s fastest-rising young actors, Thandolwethu Zondi keeps moving up with a leading role in Mzansi Bioskop’s new Youth Month film, Phambili Nge Gwijo.
The actor, known for his work in Outlaws, Shaka iLembe, and Netflix’s GO!, stars as Simiso, a talented student who wants to bring his school’s struggling choir back to life using the unifying power of igwijo.
What is Phambili Nge Gwijo about?
Phambili Nge Gwijo follows Simiso, a musically gifted student who is appointed choir captain in an effort to help his school’s choir reclaim its former glory. Determined to breathe new life into the group, Smiso introduces his passion for igwijo into the choir’s repertoire, sparking a journey of self-discovery, teamwork and cultural pride.
Who is in the cast of Phambili Nge Gwijo?
The film is led by Thandolwethu Zondi as Simiso, alongside a young ensemble cast including Likhey Booi, Masungulo Khosa, Mosa Lekwene and Carpo More.
They are joined by a strong supporting cast of seasoned actors, including Muzi Mthabela, Bongile Mantsai, Siyasanga Papu, Kayise Ngqula and Zandile Msutwana.
What does Thandolwethu Zondi say about the film?
Zondi describes the project as one of the most rewarding experiences of his career to date.
“In my opinion, this is a 10 out of 10 project,” says Zondi. “It challenged me as an actor, pushed me creatively and allowed me to build genuine friendships with my fellow cast members that extended beyond the set.”
While music plays a central role in the film, Zondi admits that singing is not his primary talent.
“I do sing in the movie, but honestly, I’m more of a shower singer,” he laughs. “I took on the role because it felt like a full-circle moment for me. I was introduced to igwijo around 2015 while I was in high school. I attended a Model C school where there wasn’t much gwijo culture, so I was one of the students encouraging others to embrace it. It became a huge part of our football culture and school life. Then, almost exactly 10 years later, I got the opportunity to star in a film about igwijo. That connection made the experience incredibly special.”

The film showcases igwijo not only as a musical expression but as a powerful tool for building unity among young people.
“iGwijo is always strongest when it’s done collectively,” explains Zondi. “That’s one of the beautiful messages of the film. It highlights how igwijo can strengthen friendships among high school students and bring people together through a shared sense of identity and purpose
