A new South African reality series, Mgidi Moms, is set to premiere on Mzansi Magic on Sunday, 29 March. Hosted by television presenter and actor Moshe Ndiki, the show centres on the cultural journey of Xhosa boys transitioning into manhood through initiation, told from the perspective of their mothers.
The series focuses on a significant rite of passage in Xhosa culture. While initiation has traditionally been guided by men, Mgidi Moms highlights the growing role mothers play in preparing for and supporting their sons during this important period. Their involvement reflects family values, cultural respect and emotional support.
Each episode introduces viewers to a different mother known as a zibazana, who is preparing her son for initiation. Cameras follow the process from early planning through to the send-off, offering insight into the responsibilities and emotions that come with this milestone. The show documents how families balance tradition with modern realities while honouring cultural practices.
The mothers featured in the series approach the occasion in different ways. Some organise large celebrations to mark the transition, while others prefer a quieter, traditional send-off. Despite these differences, they share a common focus on family unity, heritage and their sons’ wellbeing.
Told through the voices of both mothers and sons, Mgidi Moms presents a grounded look at identity, tradition and community within Xhosa culture.
Moshe Ndiki, recognised with honours from the DStv Viewers’ Choice Awards, leads the series as host. He guides viewers through each family’s journey while providing context and reflection on the cultural importance of the experience.
We recently caught up with Moshe, who gave us the tea on hosting the show, being back on Mzansi Magic, what viewers can expect and more.
How does it feel to be back on Mzansi Magic?
Being back on Mzansi Magic feels like returning home. It is where all my dreams started and continue to live out – it feels so familiar. I’ll always be a huge fan of how the channel keeps on growing in terms of their shows.
Why did you say yes to doing Mgidi Moms?
I said yes to hosting Mgidi Moms because I thought one, it is a fantastic concept and two, it is about time that we see content told by us, for us.
Did this process remind you of your personal journey?
Being a part of this show definitely reminded me of my own personal journey when I went through this rite of passage in 2009. It’s so beautiful witnessing it through the eyes of what feels like my own mother: what she went through, the stresses of putting everything together, the hope for everything to fall into place. It’s special just being a part of all of these celebrations and what they mean to the families.
How was your experience with the various moms, their sons and their families?
My experience with the moms, their sons and their families has been absolutely phenomenal. It really shows how welcoming we South Africans are and how open-minded we can be. With every family I visited, I felt embraced and treated like one of their own. So many memories were created and so many genuine bonds were formed along the way.
Why is it important to have shows that showcase our traditions?
We are celebrating not just the traditions, but also the work and care that go into putting together such a big milestone event and the pressure that goes along with that. And of course, we’re honouring the mothers who make it all happen.
Is there anything you learned about yourself while filming the show?
I learned a lot about myself while filming the show. One of the things is that I adapt very easily. I also learned that I’m a crybaby! And I will always value strong family traditions.
What is your take on women being at the forefront of these celebrations?
It’s about time we show the strength of women, as well as the work and character it takes to coordinate, deal with people and bring families together. They honestly just adore their sons and will stop at nothing to achieve the perfect mgidi.
Why should people watch the show?
People should watch the show because it’s culturally rich, beautifully shot and well presented. It’s more than a show – it’s a moment.
