Showmax’s Original action drama series Empini is set to take over from Gqeberha: The Empire on Mzansi Magic. After premiering earlier this year on Showmax, Empini now begins its TV run, starting 13 January 2025, airing Mondays to Thursdays at 9 PM. The thrilling 52-episode series dives deep into the dangerous world of VIP private security.
From Showmax to Mzansi Magic
Showmax subscribers were the first to experience the excitement of Empini when it premiered on the streaming platform on
23 May 2024. Following the conclusion of the Eastern Cape based telenovela Gqeberha: The Empire, which wrapped up its two-season run, Empini takes over the 9 PM time slot.
The storyline
Empini follows Ndoni (played by Nambitha Ben-Mazwi), a fearless and determined bodyguard who must navigate the perilous world of private security while protecting VIP clients. Alongside her is Khaya (played by Siyabonga Thwala), a political insider and businessman who becomes her unlikely mentor.
As secrets unfold and stakes rise, Ndoni faces personal and professional challenges that test her resilience, loyalty, and ambition.
The cast
Empini boasts an impressive ensemble cast led by Nambitha Ben-Mazwi (Savage Beauty, How to Ruin Christmas) as the bold bodyguard Ndoni, and Siyabonga Thwala (Isibaya, The Republic), who plays her mentor Khaya. Joining them is Nqobile Sipamla (Diep City, Imbewu: The Seed) as Masasa Fassie, alongside industry legends like Owen Sejake (Tsotsi, Beat the Drum) as General Moeti, Charmaine Mtinta (Yizo Yizo, Isono) as Dorah Themba, and Neo Ntlatleng (Zone 14, Soul City) as Ghathuso Moeti. The show also features Sparky Xulu, Simphiwe Nkabinde, Kabelo Thai, Amahle Khumalo, Joseph Sedibo, Terrence Ngwila, and Ernest Ndlovu.
