X (formerly Twitter) has made a significant policy shift, now allowing the sharing of consensual adult and pornographic content on its platform. This change allows users to post, view, and share adult material, provided it is appropriately marked and not prominently displayed.
According to X, the updated guidelines support the creation, distribution, and consumption of sexual content as long as it is consensually produced and shared. The platform underscores the role of sexual expression as a valid form of artistic representation and supports adults’ freedom to create content reflecting their beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality.
Despite this change, X remains committed to maintaining a safe online environment. The platform prohibits any adult content that is exploitative, nonconsensual, or promotes harmful behaviors or the sexualization of minors. Additionally, adult content cannot be used in profile pictures, banners, or other publicly visible areas.
Adult content on X is defined as any consensually produced material depicting nudity or sexual behavior intended to cause sexual arousal. This includes AI-generated, photographic, or animated content, such as cartoons, hentai, or anime. Examples include full or partial nudity, explicit or implied sexual behavior, and simulated sexual acts.
Users who frequently share adult content are encouraged to configure their settings to automatically add content warnings. These warnings alert viewers that they are about to view NSFW (Not Safe For Work) material. Failure to comply with these guidelines may lead to adjustments in account settings. Additionally, users under 18 or those who haven’t provided their birth date will be restricted from accessing posts marked as adult content.
This update follows X’s rebranding from Twitter in 2023 and comes as it is estimated that approximately 13% of all content on the platform featured adult material before the policy change, emphasising the impact of this shift in content moderation.
