Metro FM presenter and Idols SA judge, Somizi Mhlongo, has requested to be taken off air following reports of domestic abuse against him by his estranged husband, Mohale Motaung. The media personality is stepping away from the mic following reports in the Sunday World in which Motaung recounted alleged abuse by Somizi.
After a meeting with Metro FM management and the SABC, the public broadcaster has approved his request for time off and is distancing itself from the allegations. In a statement, the public broadcaster confirmed on Wednesday that he was off air after a meeting with the Metro FM management on Tuesday.
The Corporation has also noted the comments on social media about Mr. Mhlongo and we would like to point out that the public service broadcaster does not condone any acts of abuse and violence”.

On Monday the SABC came under attack for not acting rapidly against the media personality in light of Motaung’s abuse claims. Somizi joined Metro FM in 2016 and is now a contributor on the popular ‘Ask a Man’ daily feature on The Bridge.
