Basic Education Minister to brief media after 2025 matric marking breach detected

The Department of Basic Education has announced that Minister Siviwe Gwarube will host an urgent media briefing following the detection of an examination breach during the marking of the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams. The urgent briefing will be held on Thursday, 11 December 2025 at 08:30 in the Good Hope Chamber at Parliament in Cape Town,

According to the department, the breach was picked up through its internal monitoring and oversight systems. While the exact nature of the breach has not yet been publicly detailed, the department says immediate interventions are already underway.

Minister Gwarube will use the briefing to outline the steps being taken to protect the integrity and credibility of the 2025 matric examination results. This includes security measures, technical safeguards, and any further actions needed to ensure the marking process remains fair and credible.

The Department of Basic Education stressed that ensuring the credibility of the matric exams remains a top priority, especially given the importance of the NSC for learners’ futures.
