Ellen DeGeneres Ends Talk Show After 19 Seasons

After 18 years on air, Ellen DeGeneres has announced that her Emmy-winning talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, is coming to an end. The TV host and comedian revealed that the show’s 19th upcoming season will be the last.

While the show has come under intense attention for abuse complaints being lodged by employees, Ellen says that it’s not why she is ending her show. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Ellen said: “When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged — and as great as this show is, and as fun, as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore.”

Ellen also shared that she had planned to end the show after 16. “That was going to be my last season, and they wanted to sign for four more years and I said I’d sign maybe for one.” She admitted that the last day is going to be hard, but also added that she needs something new to challenge her.

Known for its uncommon celebrity interviews, touching human interest stories, and viral moments the daytime talk show premiered on 8 September 2003 and has broadcasted over 3000 episodes. The show has received 171 Daytime Emmy Award nominations and has won 61 Daytime Emmy Awards as of 2020, including four for Outstanding Talk Show and seven for Outstanding Talk Show Entertainment, overtaking the record held by The Oprah Winfrey Show, which won nine.
