Amakhosi Stumble Sends League To The Wire, As Relegation Fire Awaits Polokwane Outfits!

PSL Chairman Dr Irvin Khoza confirmed last month the dates for the upcoming two transfer windows as well as the proposed start date for the new season. Khoza said the league agreed that the transfer window will be officially open on September 2 and close on October 17.

On the other hand, the mid-season transfer will be open for a month between February 1st to the 1st of March 2021. According to Khoza, the 2020-21 PSL season is scheduled to get underway on October 9. Relief to the majority of the teams as they can prepare in time for the upcoming season, however, we are not yet done with the current season.

When wins are hard to find, football is a lonely game, Ernest Midderndorp (Chiefs mentor) knows very well about this, his charges lost to the clever boys on Sunday afternoon (1-0) at the FNB stadium. Following that win over the Premier Soccer League (PSL) log leaders, the clever boys seemed to have derailed the Soweto Giant’s title ambitions.

Wits moved 3rd spot on the log table with 49 points and have maximized their chances of lifting the title should Amakhosi and Mamelodi Sundowns lose their remaining matches.

Chiefs and Coach Pitso Mosimane’s men both have 53 points at the summit, but the glamour boys enjoy an advantage based on goal difference. Bidvest wits can steal the Lucrative crown as they could end up with 55 points from their last two games. Coach Middendorp tried to shun the media after the game with Wits on Sunday but was quick to lament they missed chances in his post-match analysis on Television. However, Chiefs were consoled by the fact that the defending champs lost 1-0 to relegation-threatened Baroka FC on Sunday evening leaving the title race open.

To pour hot water to his wounds Ernst Middendorp’s men suffered a major blow following news goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has been ruled out for the end of the season.

To centre things home, Celtic sit eighth on the log table with 36 points, as they have two games remaining to wrap up their 2019/20 season and will face Golden Arrows and Maritzburg United. While on the other hand, John Meduka’s men hope to bag a gold medal as they are scheduled to face Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup final on Tuesday, September 8th.

If you are wondering about the Sea Robbers (Orlando Pirates) they secured a maiden win since the current season resumed after defeating Supersport United 2-1 on Saturday. Desperate to snap their six-match winless run in the league and boost their hopes of qualifying for next seasons Caf Confederation Cup. That victory took buccaneers to 4th on the league standing-a point behind 3rd placed SuperSport United with two matches left. SuperSport United was looking to extend their unbeaten run to six matches (Its clearly a game of sixes *smiley face* excuse the pun) in the league having defeated Polokwane City and Black leopards in their last two games.

Speaking of the Polokwane outfits they are flirting with relegation now and I am afraid it might get deeper. God forbid, of course, Lidododa Duvha (Black Leopards) had their hopes squashed of surviving relegation have recorded two successive wins over Maritzburg United and Golden Arrows.  But losing to SuperSport United (1-0) last week Tuesday and AmaZulu on the weekend with the same scoreline, saw them move to 15th on the log- a point above the relegation zone with 26 points.

On the other hand, Polokwane City drew both their previous matches with Highlands Park United and Bloemfontein Celtic from the weekend the sit bottom of the standings with 25 points.

For the two sides from Polokwane, their two remaining fixtures continue Wednesday with Black Leopards taking on Bidvest Wits and Polokwane City facing Mamelodi Sundowns both at 18:00. Meanwhile, on Saturday (their last fixtures), Black Leopards take on Mamelodi Sundowns as Polokwane City face Bidvest Wits both at 15:30. Yes, they exchange fixtures, they should probably share tactics as well if their hope to survive.
