Regina Nesengani, known for her role as Vho-Masindi Mukwevho on SABC 2’s popular Tshivenda soapie, Muvhango, has achieved a remarkable milestone outside of the entertainment world. Recently, she was awarded a Ph.D. in Languages, Linguistics, and Literature from the University of South Africa (UNISA). What makes this accomplishment even more noteworthy is that her doctoral dissertation tackled the sensitive issue of gender-based violence, written entirely in her native Tshivenda language.
In an interview with Daily Sun, the 65-year-old actress shared that her dissertation’s focus stemmed from her observations within communities where people often turn a blind eye to domestic strife. Her aim was clear: to shed light on the plight of women facing such challenges.
Regina’s journey to academia began long before her soap opera fame. She started as a teacher back in 1975 and later transitioned into acting, joining Muvhango in 2008. Her commitment to education didn’t waver as she completed her Master’s degree in 2011 and retired from teaching in 2014. The groundwork for her groundbreaking Ph.D. research was laid in 2015 with her thesis proposal.
Recognizing her outstanding achievement, both the SABC and Word Of Mouth Pictures are planning a grand celebration on Wednesday, December 9th, to honor Regina’s academic triumph. Congratulations to her on this well-deserved accolade!
