Job Applications 101

Applying for jobs can be thrilling. Various aspects are relative when looking for greener pastures. But beyond that, one needs to know themselves, what their skills are, and what value they could bring.

When recruiters post jobs with specifications on what’s needed from the person to be in-role, it’s not just from a legal standpoint that they do so. Job descriptions exist for a reason; to highlight exactly what the minimum requirements are, and skills/behaviours needed to be successful in a role.

My tips:

1. Please read the job description thoroughly.

2. If you do not meet the minimum requirements of a job posted, please do not apply for it. If the ad says it requires minimum 5 years’ experience in a certain field and you only have 1-2 years experience, you don’t meet the minimum requirements of the job. Be self-aware and honest.

3. Make sure you read the company blurb and you’re aligned to its values and strategy.

4. Don’t rush your job application. Put careful consideration behind it; don’t just do it because you want to ‘get out’ of your current company. Check your motivators.

5. Make sure your CV and cover letter is updated and addressed to the company you are applying to.

This is potentially your future. Start it off right.
