Actress Angel Zuma is leaving her role on Umkhokha: The Curse to join the prestigious musical The Lion King. According to Zimoja, Zuma, known for her dynamic role as Nomkhosi, the wife of Khulekani Mthembu (played by Msizi Njapha), is poised to make her transition from the popular telenovela to a prestigious international production.
Zuma previously turned down the offer to join The Lion King due to personal and confidential reasons. However, the opportunity resurfaced, and this time she embraced it with enthusiasm. “My friend has always wanted to go and work abroad,” said a close associate to Zimoja. After finalising her contract with the global production, Zuma informed the producers of Umkhokha of her decision to leave.
Her departure is a significant blow to Umkhokha, where her role as Nomkhosi has been a major draw for viewers. The show’s producers now face the challenge of either finding a replacement or crafting an appropriate exit storyline for her character. Currently, Nomkhosi and her husband, Khulekani, are involved in a plotline about a breakaway church led by Khulekani’s brother, Siphamandla Mthembu (played by Nay Maps).
With Zuma’s exit, there is speculation about how Umkhokha will address her departure, especially since her character’s storyline is ongoing. An insider mentioned that while it’s uncertain how her exit will be managed, there might be a chance for her to return and film proper exit scenes.
Producers of Umkhokha are expected to hold auditions soon to address Zuma’s departure and possibly introduce new characters. Portia Hlongwane, publicist for Mzansi Magic, confirmed Zuma’s exciting new role in The Lion King, which will take her to Toronto, Canada. “She is excited for the opportunity… viewers can continue to see her on screen,” Hlongwane stated.
