World Number 7 Puts Brakes On The 2020 Season

“I will be taking the remainder of the season off to focus on my health and training…” reads a statement released by Bianca Andreescu on Tuesday evening.

The World No.7 has been struggling with injuries and will miss the French Open. Bianca Andreescu has called it a day on the 2020 season but vows to come back “stronger and better.”

The Canadian, who won the 2019 US Open, suffered a knee injury at last year’s WTA Finals and has been short of full fitness since. A foot injury has added to her woes and the result has been her continued absence from the WTA tour.

With the French Open due to start on Sunday, she has announced that she is going to miss the slam and take further time off.

Andreescu’s absence from Paris adds to that of world No.1 Ashleigh Barty, who is not competing due to corvid-19 concerns.

Naomi Osaka, the recent US Open Champion, will also not be there due to hamstring injury that she managed throughout the competition in New York.

Meanwhile in case you missed it Rome was quite a show on the weekend, with Novak Djokovic in a league of his own after overtaking Rafael Nadal on the all-time list of Masters 1000 winners.

Djokovic defeated Diego Schwartzman to win the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. His fifth Italian Open as well as sealing a record 36 Masters 1000 title thanks to a 7-5;6-3 victory. Sweet Relief for the Serb international who’s returns to court comes at the back of his previous disqualification at the US Open for striking a line judge unintentionally with a ball.

On the other hand, Simona Halep claimed her third consecutive title of the year, at Italian Open after Karolina Pliskova retired through injury when she was 6-0;2-1 down. Second-ranked Pliskova received treatment on her lower back and leg after Halep won that opening set. With the absence of Naomi Osaka and Ashleigh Barty followed recently with Bianca Andreescu Simona Halep will head to Roland Garros as one of the firm favourites.
