Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa resigns

The Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa has resigned with immediate effect. His resignation was confirmed by the ministry of Sports, Arts, and Culture announcing that he made the decision after being formally charged.

Kodwa, together with his co-accused, former EOH boss Jehan Mackay, appeared today at the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court where they were granted R30,000 each. They face corruption charges amounting to R1.7 million. Kodwa allegedly received bribes from Mackay in exchange for government contracts worth R400 million awarded to Mackay’s company.

According to the African National Congress (ANC), Kodwa who is also a member of the National Executive Committee is expected to face disciplinary action. ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri emphasised the seriousness of the allegations, “The step-aside policy will step in or should I say the Constitution of the ANC will kick in because we all respect the rule of law and there is really no question about it.”

This development aligns with a resolution passed during the ANC’s 2017 elective conference, mandating that office bearers implicated in serious crimes step down from their positions until cleared by the court. The move aims to safeguard the ANC’s reputation, which has come under fire for tolerating corruption and protecting its members from prosecution.
