Pascal Gross joins Borussia Dortmund from Brighton

Borussia Dortmund, the Champions League runners-up, have made a significant addition to their squad by signing German midfielder Pascal Gross from Brighton & Hove Albion.

On Thursday, Dortmund confirmed that Gross, 33, has joined the club on a two-year deal after successfully passing his medical. He will soon join the team in Switzerland for their pre-season training camp. The transfer fee is reported to be around €7.5 million ($8.1 million), with additional performance-based add-ons.

Gross began his Bundesliga career with Hoffenheim in 2009 and played his last top-flight match in Germany with Ingolstadt seven years ago before moving to Brighton. At Brighton, Gross made 228 Premier League appearances.

Though he made his Germany debut just last year, Gross was a substitute during Euro 2024, marking a late yet impactful entry into international football.

Dortmund’s managing director for sport, Lars Ricken, expressed enthusiasm about the new signing: “Pascal has become a top performer at the highest level over the last few years. He will give us more solidity and flexibility, and with his experience he will be leader who has a very positive impact for us.”

Gross shared his excitement about the move, “I’m delighted to be a Borussia Dortmund player. Signing for this club is a huge deal for me, as I’ve been a Dortmund fan since I was a kid. I’ll try to repay the club’s faith in me by playing my game, and I can’t wait to play alongside my new teammates in front of the BVB fans and to work hard with everyone here to achieve our ambitious goals.”

Gross is the third significant signing for Dortmund this summer, following the arrivals of Waldemar Anton and Serhou Guirassy from VfB Stuttgart. New coach Nuri Sahin is looking to improve on last season’s fifth-place Bundesliga finish with these key additions to the squad.
