Universal Pictures is set to bring the life of pop icon Britney Spears to the big screen. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the studio has secured the film rights to Spears’ 2023 best-selling memoir, The Woman in Me,which caused a stir with its candid revelations, including Spears’ account of having an abortion during her relationship with Justin Timberlake. Jon M. Chu, known for directing the studio’s upcoming two-part adaptation of Wicked, will helm the project. Marc Platt, who has worked on hits like Wicked and La La Land, is on board as producer.
Spears expressed her excitement about the film on social media, saying, “Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned 🌹🎥”
Spears’ career took off with her 1998 debut single Baby One More Time, which achieved platinum status 14 times. Her achievements include a Grammy win in 2005, a role in the 2002 film Crossroads, and a successful Piece of Me global tour in 2018. Her conservatorship, which attracted significant media attention, was terminated in 2021.
Universal Pictures is no stranger to successful musical biopics. Their film Straight Outta Compton, about rap group N.W.A., grossed over $200 million, while 8 Mile, starring Eminem, won an Oscar for Best Original Song. The studio is also working on a Snoop Dogg biopic and a jukebox musical featuring Prince’s songs, produced by Ryan Coogler. Additionally, Universal recently completed an untitled musical from director Michel Gondry, inspired by Pharrell Williams’ childhood neighborhood.
