Showmax is making significant strides in the African entertainment scene with its first Nigerian original series, I Am LAYCON, set to premiere in February 2021. The series will feature Lekan Agbeleshe, widely known as Laycon, who gained fame as the winner of Big Brother Naija Season 5.
Laycon’s journey to stardom
At just 26 years old, Laycon has already made waves in the music industry and reality TV. A philosophy graduate and talented musician, he transformed his humble beginnings into a remarkable career. Laycon captured the hearts of viewers during BBNaija, showcasing his intelligence and lyrical prowess.
On September 27, 2020, he emerged victorious among 19 other housemates, taking home an impressive 85 million Naira (approximately R3.3 million). His popularity skyrocketed post-show, amassing over 2.4 million followers as he embarks on creating his debut album.
A reality show about life after BBNaija
I Am LAYCON invites BBNaija fans and reality TV lovers to follow Laycon’s life as he deals with fame, personal relationships, and his music career in Lagos, one of Africa’s largest cities. The series promises to reveal whether he can achieve his ambitions in the competitive entertainment landscape.
In Laycon’s own words, “I am excited to continue my new life journey and embrace the new responsibilities of evolving not just myself but everyone around me. I want you to come along for the ride as you get to see the growth that you have supported and loved.”
Recent achievements and future plans
Recently, Laycon signed a brand ambassadorship deal with GOtv. Fans can also expect the release of the music video for his hit single, HipHop, soon.

I Am LAYCON, filmed in Nigeria, is just the start for Showmax. Other upcoming original series include Blood Psalms, a drama about ancient Africa by Jahmil X.T. Qubeka, and Uthando Lodumo, a reality series about South Africa’s gqom queen, Babes Wodumo, and her fiancé, Mampintsha. Both are set to launch in 2021.
