Bayern Munich coach Kompany silent on key player exits

Bayern Munich’s new head coach, Vincent Kompany, declined to discuss the future of several key players amidst recent comments by honorary president Uli Hoeness hinting at potential departures before the transfer window closes. Speaking at a press conference kicking off a three-day training camp in Bavaria, Kompany opted not to delve into specific player names.

“Names are not part of my thinking,” new coach Kompany told a news conference at the start of a three-day training camp outside of Munich in Bavaria.

The Belgian was confronted with questions about the future of midfielder Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry as well as which position full back and midfielder Joshua Kimmich is to to play.

“You have spoken about buying and selling. That is not my job,” he told one reporter.

Bayern has made significant investments this transfer window, totaling around €125 million ($136 million), securing talents like defender Hiroki Ito, midfielder João Palhinha, and winger Michael Olise from Crystal Palace. These acquisitions are set to reshape the team’s dynamics, but Kompany remained steadfast in his refusal to engage with transfer discussions. “I won’t deal with it. No chance.”

Kompany added that “I am not here to conduct a news conference about what Uli Hoeness said. I have too much respect for him. But it is my job to concentrate on my work.”

Following Thomas Tuchel, Kompany currently manages a squad of 27 players at the Rottach-Egern camp, with those involved in Euro 2024 and the Copa America set to join later. Looking ahead to upcoming engagements, Kompany acknowledged the team’s imminent travel to South Korea next week but hinted that the squad may not yet be finalized.

Among those absent will be Euro 2024 participants Harry Kane of England, Kingsley Coman and Dayot Upamecano of France, and Copa America semi-finalist Alphonso Davies of Canada.
